However, the Christmas peak also involves \u201cearthly\u201d warehouses: in fact, between late November and the first half of January, many logistics platforms enter the so-called peak season, a compressed phase in which demand explodes, orders fragment, and delivery times shrink dramatically.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Christmas peak season: 2.3 billion parcels in the US alone<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a numerical standpoint, the phenomenon is striking: for the 2025 season, ShipMatrix estimates that US carriers will handle around 2.3 billion parcels during the Christmas window alone, giving a clear sense of the operational load facing logistics providers and couriers. This pressure is not just statistical: every element of intralogistics is put under operational stress. Automated storage and picking systems\u2014AS\/RS and high-density shuttles\u2014must maintain continuous reliability; picking robots and shuttles must sustain fast cycles without incidents, while sorters and conveyors represent the real critical nodes: if not properly redundant and balanced, they can become bottlenecks and trigger cascading delays.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A stressed ecosystem<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two areas are particularly decisive. The first is orchestration software: WMS, WES, fleet managers and real-time visibility systems must handle workloads far above normal levels, make instant decisions on prioritisation and routing, and ensure operational coherence between humans and machines. Numerous post-peak surveys show a gap between the confidence companies have entering the season and the actual results achieved under stress, highlighting how software orchestration often makes the difference between operational success and failure.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Robotic fleets<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second area is energy management for robotic fleets. AMRs and AGVs increase flexibility and throughput (i.e. the amount of goods handled per unit of time), but during peak season they require opportunistic charging strategies, fast-charging batteries, and scalable infrastructure to prevent charging times from becoming downtime. At the same time, reverse logistics surges immediately after the holidays: return waves can saturate dedicated lines and quality control stations, requiring separate areas and processes that must be prepared before the peak begins.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peak surcharges as a disincentive<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers explain why carriers and sorting centres plan large seasonal hiring campaigns, introduce peak surcharges, and temporarily increase capacity. Some operators have also adopted peak surcharges to offset additional costs and discourage non-optimised delivery windows. At national level, postal operators and parcel networks have reported record days in which daily volumes reached exceptional levels, confirming that the phenomenon also affects mature markets such as Italy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The goal: never stop<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid being caught unprepared, experience shows three operational priorities: physical and logical scalability, meaning modular systems that can be activated without stopping warehouse operations; software orchestration, with integrated WES\/WMS and dashboards to rebalance queues and priorities in real time; and workforce planning, with targeted seasonal hiring, cross-training and accelerated onboarding to reduce time-to-productivity for temporary staff. To these levers are added technological best practices\u2014redundancy for critical sorters, opportunistic and wireless charging for AMRs, use of digital twins to simulate extreme scenarios, and separate return lines\u2014which all reduce operational risk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the human aspect cannot be overlooked: peak periods increase stress, shift length and the risk of errors. Investing in workstation ergonomics, clearer operational interfaces and rotation policies is essential to protect quality, safety and workforce motivation.
